Pajarito Mountain & Los Alamos Ski Club Host Ullr Fest Saturday

Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, in partnership with the Los Alamos Ski Club will host Ullr Fest this Saturday, Oct. 1.
 
Ullr Fest is a community event honoring Ullr, in hopes of bringing a good ski season to Pajarito Mountain this winter. The event includes a brewfest, two concerts, a downhill mountain bike race, a disc golf tournament, and a costume contest.

Saturday’s Ullr Festival includes live music from noon to 5pm by JJ and the Hoolians, and Bronach Celtic Blues. The New Mexico Craft BeerFest is noon to 5 p.m.

“The Magnificent Seven”, a classic western from 1960, has been remade for modern audiences.
 
As remakes go, this one is well done, respecting the genre and adding just enough humor to balance with the final, inevitable bloodbath. The plot, copied in the 1960 version from Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 movie, Seven Samurai, remains.
 
The setting, however, is a small town called Rose Creek in the late 1800s West, settled by homesteaders, now taken over by a robber baron in the business of mining gold.

New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) will perform at the Moving Arts Theater at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Española. 

Moving Arts is co-sponsoring the free performance, which will feature all four of NMSA’s artistic focuses: dance, music, theater, and visual arts. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch students perform and learn about the arts-focused public high school, which accepts students from across New Mexico. NMSA also will perform school shows during the day for students throughout the Española area.

This year’s souvenir take-home glass is a 16-ounce SOLO cup. In order to participate in the Brewersfest, individuals must pay a $15 entry fee, have a photo ID ready and they will receive a glass, which includes one ticket. The community is invited to this year’s production of Beauty and the Beast presented by Dances of India, 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 at Duane Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos.
 
Admission is free but donations in all forms (cash, check) are much appreciated (suggested $10 per head, $5 for children 10 and under). There also will be an Indian bazaar held during intermission.

Although Bandelier’s 100th birthday was in February, and the National Park Service Centennial was in August, the celebrations continue with more events in the next weeks. 
 
This Saturday, Sept. 24, is the annual Public Lands Day, which is fee free at National Park Service areas nationwide. At Bandelier, that means that there are no entrance fees that day at the main part of the park or at the Tsankawi section.
