Rehearsal was in full throttle Sunday for the upcoming Los Alamos Little Theatre (LALT) production of “Van Choc Straw” by Marc Dunn.

The play opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Black Mesa Brass Quintet to Perform Brown Bag Concert

The Black Mesa Brass Quintet will perform as part of the Brown Bag Performance series at noon Wednesday, March 6 at Fuller Lodge.

Since 1973, Brown Bag Performances have entertained Los Alamos music lovers with a wide variety of music. Concerts are usually at noon on the first Wednesday of the month.

Brown Bag Performances are sponsored by the Los Alamos Arts Council (LAAC) and funded in part by the County of Los Alamos.

The Black Mesa Brass Quintet was formed in 1990 and still has three of the original five members.

New York City Jazz Will Heat Up Fuller Lodge

Staff Report

Two NYC jazz musicians will perform on piano and trumpet at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at Fuller Lodge.

Roy Dunlap (piano) and Marcus Parsley (trumpet) are world-class musicians and Saturday’s concert will be a real treat for jazz lovers.

Local jazz musicians will open the show. Tickets are $15 ($10 for students and seniors) and are available at http://tickethookups.com/NYCJazzFullerLodge or at the door.

Roy Dunlap began playing professionally at age 14. He attained a Master’s in Piano at Queens College in New York City, studying with Sir Roland Hanna.

Hey gang! This week, I think I’m going to stick to a couple shorter topics on different ends of the Reality Show continuum…

The Grammys

The Grammys were on last week and I managed to watch a good deal of the telecast over a few days using the old DVR.

It’s tough to watch the whole program at one time because, as with most Hollywood awards shows, it overflows with lots of ego, over-hyped records and performances, and, of course, mindless banter.

Santa Fe Opera One of Three American Companies Nominated for International Award

They are to be called “The Operas,” the new International Opera Awards established in London to celebrate the work of opera companies throughout the world. 

The brainchild of British businessman Harry Hyman, of Nexus Group, John Allison, editor of OPERA magazine, and the London Evening Standard, the first nominees have already been received, judges chosen, and the awards ceremony scheduled for April 22 in London.

Actor/Poet David Mills Performs as Langston Hughes

The Jim Sagel Memorial Lecture Series at UNM-Los Alamos  will present award-winning poet David Mill at 7 p.m. Monday, March 4 in the Building 2 Lecture Hall at UNM-LA.

Mills will perform an excerpt from his show, “Dreamweaver: The Works of Langston Hughes.” The reading is free and open to the public.

Mills also will be visiting Instructor Zandree Stidham’s English classes the same day as the performance.
