Co-opRocks! is brought to you by the Los Alamos Co-op as part of their outreach program to young adults (high school and college age). The program is intended to provide young adults a venue to express their interests (music, art, theater, etc.) in a fun and safe atmosphere. General Manager, Steve Watts said, “We strive to share our cooperative values through this venue by sourcing local talent and encouraging young adults and the community to come support each other at Co-opRocks!”

Special School Board Meeting Scheduled

SCHOOL BOARD News

The School Board has scheduled a work session on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 9 am at UNMLA Building 1, basement classroom for ESL to meet with GED students regarding their high school experience. 

The School Board has scheduled a Special School Board meeting for Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. at the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater. The only agenda item will be the 2012/2013 Budget.

Lunch with a Leader Set for Thursday

The League of Women Voter’s monthly Lunch with a Leader is set for 11:45 a.m., Thursday May 10 at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) on Orange Street.

Carol A. Clark of the Los Alamos Daily Post is the featured leader. Clark has covered local news in Los Alamos for nearly a decade.

Bold Knights and Ladies Fair Celebrate the Middle Ages in Los Alamos

On April 28, 2012, the banner of the Shire of Bryngolau (Shining Hill in Welsh) was raised for the first time when local members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) gathered for a day of fighting, feasting, music and dance in the style of the Middle Ages.

It was the Shire’s first official event.

SCA is a non-profit educational organization devoted to the study of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It isn’t just about research far from it.

Officials Conduct ‘Every 15 Minutes’ Debriefing

LAHS Varsity Science Bowl Team Make New Mexico History

Congratulations to the Los Alamos High School Varsity Science Bowl team who made New Mexico history in the epic campaign to win National Science Bowl. Facing the best and the brightest that America has to offer, the team made up of Scott Carlsten, Micha Ben-Naim, Lorenzo Venneri, Kevin Gao, and Alexandr Wang, placed 9th in the nation. This was the first time a New Mexico team has broken round robin play and made double elimination. A New Nature Center – A Natural Fit for Los Alamos

As Los Alamos considers the merits and possibility of building a municipal nature center, it is worth considering the genesis of the idea and the value that it adds to our community.  

Back in 1999 a large group of citizens gathered in Fuller Lodge to express their interest in a Los Alamos Nature Center. When asked for help in turning the idea into reality, a core group of deeply committed people volunteered.  We began to meet in various homes, some of which were lost months later to the Cerro Grande Fire.

Andrew Zhao Named 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar

LAHS News:

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has announced the selection of Los Alamos High School senior Andrew Zhao as a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Zhao is one of 141 outstanding American high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community.

The U. S. Presidential Scholars will be honored for their accomplishments in Washington D.C., June 16–19.
