COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Council Leadership has put an agenda item on its May 24 Council Meeting agenda to discuss an independent audit of the County’s personnel policies and of the execution of those policies.

Council Vice Chair Susan O’Leary requested this agenda item as a follow-up to the recently settled lawsuits. O’Leary commented that “Ensuring that County policies are appropriate and are being implemented consistently in a way that minimizes lawsuits is a prudent and necessary action that the Council should take to fulfill our duty to perform County management oversight.” Read More

Los Alamos

Several recent letters to the editor have questioned the validity of the County’s plan to construct a roundabout at the main entry into and out of Los Alamos townsite; specifically, where Trinity Drive and Central Avenue join.

I share the concerns raised in these various letters, and have created a town map that illustrates how ALL TRAFFIC INTO AND OUT OF Los Alamos townsite will need to be DIVERTED during the lengthy construction period. The map is designed to be self-explanatory, but I would like to add a few more observations.

Letter To The Editor: What Is Justification For Trinity/Central Roundabout?

By TONY AMSDEN
Los Alamos

A significant number of issues have been identified with the impending roundabout at Trinity and Central, which is slated to be built next year. These issues include the following considerations:

  • The current design is unsafe for trucks, buses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians.
  • At morning and evening rush hours drivers going in the principal east-west direction will simply blow through it, stranding drivers who are not brave enough or experienced enough to barge in.
  • There is likely to be a significant increase in accidents, which will bring traffic to

Letter To The Editor: Central-NM502: Maximal Concrete And Asphalt Or Walker Safety And Some Green Space

By JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

Calling all Los Alamos citizens,

The planned roundabout at Central-N.M. 502 is NOT the cat’s meow that once was touted to us citizens! Below is a pictorial comparison of two options (original NMDOT signalized and the currently planned roundabout).

Have a look at the differences in the footprint of these two options. The planned roundabout is a huge mass of concrete and asphalt. Those who have sought less concrete and asphalt will actually get lots more of it at the expense of green space and pedestrian/biker safety!

The 2007 NMDOT plan  would expand Read More

Maggiore: Running Because I Care

Antonio Maggiore

By ANTONIO MAGGIORE
Democratic Candidate
Los Alamos County Council

I’m running for County Council because I care. I can’t put it in any simpler terms than that. I care deeply about this town.

This secluded secretive science stuffed suburbia is home to me. I was born here, I grew up in Los Alamos, I graduated high school here. Like so many of our youth, I left as soon as I was able, and like a much smaller number, I returned.

I have never worked at the lab. I have however worked at many small businesses in town throughout my life. Now, I find myself braving the uncertain world of owning Read More

By BILL MCKERLEY
Republican Candidate
Los Alamos County Probate Judge

I am Bill McKerley and I am a candidate for the position of Probate Judge for Los Alamos County. Before I tell you a little bit about me and why I am a candidate, I thought it might be informative to say a few words about probate and the function of the Probate Judge.

Probate is the judicial process for transferring the property of a person who has died (called decedent). The property is transferred according to either: (1) the decedent’s Will, or (2) if the decedent dies without a Will, according to New Mexico’s

Letter To The Editor: About N.M. 502 Project Cost And Starting Times

By JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

Councilors and Manager,

This N.M. 502 project may be a state project, but LAC has funding participation AND is the requester of (1) the roundabout and (2) a different Canyon Road configuration than the state was planning to construct.

Seems there are some funny cost numbers being tossed around now and some others just not forthcoming.

This project has HAD to be started by the end of several FY deadlines or else funding would go away, the latest being September of this year. The Knecht-Tewa project HAS already BEGUN. It did so with the work from Knecht-DP to get Smith’s
