Partnership Between Y, Bandelier And UNM-LA Creates Class To Enhance Understanding For Federal Jobs

A partnership between the Y, Bandelier and UNM-LA has created a new college credit class this summer that can help people understand and apply for federal jobs.

The Environmental Technology course, “Introduction to Conservation and Land Management,” is 3-5 p.m. Fridays, June 16 to July 21.

Introduction to Conservation and Land Management, taught by Bandelier’s Chief of Resource Management Jeremy Sweat, was created for participants in the Y Bandelier Corps (YBC) through The Family YMCA, but also is being offered to all UNM-LA students.

Bird Walk In Upper Water Canyon Saturday

Los Alamos resident and bird watcher Joe Fitzgibbon will lead a hike at 7 a.m. Saturday in Upper Water Canyon. This half-day trip will take birders about two miles along the bottom of the canyon, through a mosaic of burned and unburned areas. Sightings may include the empidonax flycatchers (Dusky, Hammond’s, and Cordilleran), wrens, Western Tanagers, Stellar’s Jays, Green-tailed Towhees, warblers and woodpeckers.

Two-Day Geology Tour Of Mount Taylor Region In June

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is offering a special overnight tour June 17-18 of the Mount Taylor region. The tour will focus on the geology of the area, and is suitable for geologists and non-geologists alike. Space is limited for this trip.

Geologists Fraser and Cathy Goff will lead the tour, which includes the earth science and volcanology of Mount Taylor and surrounding areas. There are various stops along the drive to Mount Taylor on the first day, some of which will highlight rocks with interesting mineralogy and textures.  Read More

Local resident and American Legion Auxiliary icon Marie Todd who has been in charge of the program since being passed the torch in 1969 from Louise Mendez is hopeful that local young ladies will take the opportunity to experience what New Mexico has to offer.

Young women headed into their senior year in high school can apply for New Mexico Girl’s State being held June 4-9 this year. The one week experience boasts tremendous leadership training, three college credits and the experience of a lifetime surrounded in Americanism. Read More

Loui Janecky, 36-year head coach and director at Los Alamos School of Gymnastics on North Mesa, has just been re-elected to the USA Gymnastics Xcel National Committee.

As a member of the original USA Gymnastics Xcel committee, Janecky is one of the authors of the National Xcel Competitive Program. She represents Region 3, (Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado and Kansas), on the National Committee.
