See Distant Worlds At Nature Center Aug. 18-19

The new film Distant Worlds – Alien Life, which premiered last month, will play at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 and 19 in the Los Alamos Nature Center planetarium. 
 
There will not be a show Friday, Aug. 18, but the astronomy shows will return the following Friday with an eclipse update and night sky show by Dr. Galen Gisler at 7 p.m. Aug. 25.

JJAB Raises $3K For LAPS Student School Supplies

JJAB News:

Thanks to the generosity of community businesses and individuals, the Los Alamos JJAB had a successful summer fundraiser; $3,000 was raised. The money will be used to support the Los Alamos Public Schools and students.

JJAB is now working with the five elementary, middle and high schools to identify student and school supply needs. Once determined, JJAB will purchase the supplies and deliver them directly to the schools.

Los Alamos Gathers In Solidarity With Charlottesville

Candlelight vigil organizer Ellen Ben-Naim welcomes some 150 community members who gathered Monday evening in solidarity with Charlottesville, Va., where a woman was killed and others injured Saturday during a white supremacist rally. Voices of Los Alamos in conjunction with other local organizations hosted the peaceful gathering to take a stand against hatred and violence. Community Playdate, Literacy Programs Aug. 29

The Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) Family Resource Specialists and Mesa Public Library children’s librarians are hosting a community playdate for children ages newborn to 5-years-old.

This drop-in event 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, in the Youth Services rooms at Mesa Public Library. The community playdate is being held to kick-off two early childhood literacy programs – Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Last week several Los Alamos athletes competed in the 2017 Western Zone Championship Swim Meet in Roseville, Calif. Andy Corliss, Duncan Henderson, Orion Henderson, Carson Hicks, Savannah Kimball, Ming Lo, Konstantine Nelson and Sophia Pieck were eight of the 57 swimmers representing the New Mexico Zone Team. LAPD: Let’s Work Together To Make School Year Safe

LAPD News:

With school starting this Thursday, Aug. 17, the Los Alamos Police Department will be stepping up its presence in designated school zones throughout the communty.

While all drivers have a responsibility of adjusting their driving habits during school hours, parents of school children have a responsibility as well in keeping kids safe. Please pay attention to your speed and watch for children at cross walks.
