Local young people, ages 8 to 17 will have a chance to take to the skies in the morning of Saturday, Oct. 14 as Northern New Mexico, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 691 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Los Alamos Airport (KLAM).
 
If the weather doesn’t allow for flying on the planned date, the event will be held the following Saturday, Oct. 21.

The fourth annual Los Alamos Artists Studio Tour is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 and noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 15. This free, self-guided tour will take visiters into the studios of nine of Los Alamos and White Rock’s talented artists, in addition to two art classes from UNM-Los Alamos. Each stop offers something new and exciting.

Falls Leading Cause Of Death For NM Seniors

Los Alamos Fire Department recognized National Falls Prevention Day, Sept. 22, by offering suggestions to people over 65 on how to prevent injury or death from falls, according to Donna McHenry of the Emergency Medical Services Division.

McHenry said of all the places where fall-related deaths occurred, the home had the highest rates of occurrence. She suggested that people over 65 assess their homes with the help of a family member or friend if needed and make the usually minor changes needed to reduce their risk of falling.

One of the many beautiful quilts on display at ‘Tomorrow’s Heilrlooms, Los Alamos Piecemakers Quilt Guild (LAP) bi-annual Quilt Show 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The show continues 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Crossroads Bible Church, 97 East Road. Tickets are $2 for adults and $1for children under 12. The Los Alamos Heart Council 2017 Health Fair is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 23  at the Los Alamos High School Gymnasium.

As in past years, there will be free flu shots available (for those 18 years and older) and discounted blood tests.  Many of the dozens of booths at the Health Fair will have free screenings ranging from blood pressure, blood sugar levels and asthma to glaucoma.

The Los Alamos Heart Council (LAHC) was formed in August 1984 to promote heart health and wellness in our communities. It serves Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties.
