Rheumatologist Monica Snowden officially opens her practice at 8 a.m. Monday at Los Alamos Medical Center.

Snowden specializes in a branch of internal medicine that focuses on joint, muscle and bone disorders.

“I went into rheumatology because it’s a field where you can foster great relationships with your patients on many levels,” Snowden said. “Thirty years ago there weren’t treatments but now the treatments are extraordinary and you can have these wonderful relationships with your patients for 30 and 40 years.”

Rachel Carson Visits Los Alamos for a Chautauqua on April 18

Rachel Carson will make a special visit to Los Alamos at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 18 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. 

This surprise appearance is in fact by Ann Beyke, who will be taking on Carson’s persona in a performance known as a Chautauqua. 

What’s so special about Carson’s view of the world?

Anyone who enjoyed a recent magical snowstorm that quickly dissolved into spring weather knows the charm of hearing the birds sing as new life emerges from fallow flowerbeds.

Sunday Pancake Breakfast to Benefit Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter

Join friends and neighbors from 7-11 a.m. Sunday at the Los Alamos Posse Shack Lodge, 650 North Mesa Road.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast and have some fun – all to benefit the animals at the Los Alamos Animal Shelter.

Meet new furry friends at the shelter’s mobile adoption and get some unconditional love at the Doggy Kissing Booth – kisses are $1.

Also, breakfast goers can take the opportunity to bid on a $250 value photography package donated by Don Taylor’s Photography.

All proceeds from Sunday’s event go to benefit animals at the shelter.

The community-wide Earth Day Festival on April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is not only fun for children and adults but also reminds us to recycle, up-cycle, and reuse. 

This year we have two student-generated projects for recycling: collecting and contributing aluminum cans and a toy exchange.

Community Flocks to LAMC’s 60th Birthday Bash

Los Alamos Medical Center celebrated 60 years of service to the community with an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

Six decades of photographs depicting employees as well as facility renovations filled the lobby, which was decorated with balloons and tables topped with food, drinks and a big birthday cake.

Prevention Today for a Healthier Tomorrow

The Family YMCA is offering free Diabetes Prevention Classes. The class is on Tuesdays from April 3rd through May 8th from 11:00 to 11:45 am. Pre-registration at the Family YMCA is required at least 48 hours prior to the session. Classes will be held at the Y’s Administrative offices located behind the Urgent Care Center on 15th and Trinity

  • Signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

  • What does having pre-diabetes mean?

  • What are the risk factors?

Local Woman Honored as Hospice Director of the Year

LAVNS News:

Executive Director Sarah Rochester of Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service has been selected as Hospice Director of the Year by the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization.

Rochester obtained Hospice certification for Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service December 1994. 

LAVNS is the only not-for-profit, free standing Hospice service in Northern New Mexico.

LAVNS will break ground on the only Hospice House in Northern New Mexico in the near future.
