Like many people in many companies and organizations, I have been thinking a lot about innovation lately.
In my case, the effort has been a prelude to thinking about upcoming revisions to the Baldrige Program’s 2013–2014 Criteria for Performance Excellence.
I consulted works by Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Clayton Christensen, Jeff Dyer, and Hal Gergersen, as well as numerous articles and blogs.
And my conclusion was that innovation (I) is the result of intelligent risk taking (IR) and a supportive environment (SE): I =IR + SE.

Imagine a place in our downtown designed to address housing and other needs of our early career “idea people” … scientists, technologists, artists and innovators of all type … and entrepreneurs.
What would it look like? Where might be a good location? What related amenities would benefit both the residents and the larger community?
The Los Alamos Creative District Steering Committee facilitated by Los Alamos MainStreet has been putting thought and effort into these and other questions.

OTOWI STATION BOOKSTORE & RUBY K’s News:
T. Jackson King, archaeologist, science fiction author, and poet, will read from “Mother Earth’s Stretch Marks” at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 7 at Ruby K’s Bagel Café.
Tickets to the event are $10, which includes the book and refreshments, and will be available at the door the night of the event. Otowi Station Bookstore and Ruby K’s are sponsoring the event.

LOS ALAMOS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE News:
The second weekend in June features ChamberFest, a community event showcasing Chamber of Commerce member merchants, businesses and organizations.
With food, live music, a car show, fashion show, giant sand pile, bubble pit and other family entertainment, it will be a particularly entertaining day.
ChamberFest will be held in downtown Los Alamos from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9 on Central Avenue between 15th and 20th streets, down MainStreet to the Round-about.
