With pen and ink, artist Michael E. Martinez of Los Alamos’ Detonation Science and Technology group takes to paper, beautifully crafting a bleached skull with a headdress inspired by the American Plains Indians. To give it a New Mexican theme, he uses the Zia symbol for the skull’s eyes and accents the smooth face and war bonnet with turquoise coloring. Emblazoned on the New Mexico flag, the Zia symbol originated with the Zia people.

Challah Rising in the Desert: The Jews of New Mexico celebrates the history and people of New Mexico’s unique Jewish community. A special screening of this feature documentary will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Reel Deal Theater.

LA Piecemakers Presents Quilt Artist Melody Crust

The Los Alamos Piecemakers Quilt Guild invites the public to a free lecture by well-known quilt artist Melody Crust. If people have attended the Houston Quilt Show they have no doubt heard Crust share her humorous stories of how she recovered from quilt disasters and made “silk purses” out of “sows ears”.

She will present the free lecture “So Many Ideas, So Little Time” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the White Rock Presbyterian Church at 310 Rover Blvd. This is the monthly Guild meeting and a short business meeting will precede the program.
