COMMUNITY News:

Who wants to pet a baby goat? Thanks to the generosity of Del Norte LOV Foundation, Summer Family Evenings will return fully in-person every Wednesday in June and July (and one in August) to the Los Alamos Nature Center, 2600 Canyon Road.

Del Norte Credit Union and now the Del Norte LOV Foundation have sponsored this popular series of events every summer since 2015.

Summer Family Evenings happen at 6 p.m. Wednesdays, outside at the nature center. Some families come for the presentation (see below for this year’s full calendar of events) and some come to see friends and to play in the Rotary Treehouse or the fort building area, and some just to enjoy the beautiful views, blooming penstemons, and lovely sunsets.

“We are proud to sponsor these events which bring families closer to nature and each other. I brought my young daughter to see the Harrell House event last year, and it was so much fun to watch her hold a live tarantula and make new friends,” said Del Norte LOV Foundation Director Connie Tooker Nunez.

Katie Bruell, PEEC’s outgoing executive director, has been organizing these events since the new building opened.

“I love how excited kids get to see the live animals, and how many great questions they always have for the presenters,” Bruell said. “It’s also fun to see kids meet up with friends from school and run off to play together.”

Summer Family Evenings are free for PEEC members, and just $5 per family for nonmembers, with the June 28 event being free for everyone. This year’s schedule brings back some favorite presenters from previous years, and offers some new opportunities, as well.
