Statewide Law Enforcement Agencies Are Looking For Drunk Drivers

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE Law enforcement agencies will be out in force across New Mexico looking for drunk drivers as part of a holiday season safety campaign that also includes new radio and TV ads.

The law enforcement push runs through Jan. 4.

“The Thanksgiving Holiday will soon be upon us. This is a joyful time of year that we spend with our family and friends, but it’s also among the busiest travel times of the year with hundreds of thousands of motorist traveling in and through the state” State Police Chief Tim Johnson said. “That’s why my officers, from every corner of the state will be out in full force ensuring the safety of motorist. Reminding those traveling in New Mexico to obey the speed limit, wear their seat belts, don’t drive distracted and don’t drink and drive.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 30 people die in drunk driving crashes every day in the United States. That’s one person every 48 minutes. Drunk driving crashes claim more than 10,000 lives per year, according to NHTSA. The state traffic safety division reports so far this year 92 people have been killed in alcohol-involved crashes in New Mexico.

The new ENDWI ads begin airing today. One version features a young woman attending a festive holiday event at a family member’s home. Alcohol is abundant, and the young woman’s grandmother steps in to prevent her from driving drunk.

“Family celebrations are precious. Drinking and driving can make that festive time deadly for drivers, passengers and pedestrians,” Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval said. “Don’t ruin these gatherings by driving home drunk. It’s not worth it.”
