New Mexico lawmakers eager to legalize recreational marijuana are facing a looming challenge.

Simply put, time is running out.

This year’s 60-day legislative session has 20 days left, and lawmakers in the Senate have four proposals to consider.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Civil Rights Act cleared its first hurdle in the Senate Friday, passing the Senate House Health and Public Affairs Committee. The measure has already passed the House of Representatives.

New Mexico COVID-19 Update: 275 New Cases, Total Now 184,888 With 15 New Deaths And 143,774 Patients Recovered

SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials today announced 275 additional COVID-19 cases.
Los Alamos County reports 3 new case today bringing the total to 482 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. (County totals are subject to change upon further investigation and determination of residency of individuals positive for COVID-19.)

House Speaker Files Motion To Dismiss Ethics Complaint

Attorneys for House Speaker Brian Egolf submitted a motion Friday to dismiss an ethics complaint filed by a retired judge who claimed the Santa Fe Democrat stands to benefit if the New Mexico Civil Rights Act becomes law.

Egolf’s 24-page motion argues the complaint — filed earlier this month with the state Ethics Commission by former Judge Sandra Price, who served 12 years on the bench in the 11th Judicial District — should be dismissed because it is frivolous and unsubstantiated, and also doesn’t state a “claim upon which relief can be granted.” Read More

Recreational Cannabis Bill Passes New Mexico House

In a race to legalize recreational cannabis before the legislative session ends, House Bill 12 has taken a wide lead.

The New Mexico House of Representatives voted 39-31 in favor of the bill, which would allow anyone 21 and over to use cannabis products and grow small amounts for personal use or apply for a license to grow and sell it — with no production limit.

The bill heads to the Senate for consideration.

HB 12 is one of five cannabis legalization measures introduced in the Legislature. So far, it is the only one that has reached a chamber floor. Read More
