State Police Investigate Homicide In Rio Arriba County

Jullian Medelez charged with murder in the 2nd degree.

NMSP News:

El Llano – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted Sunday to investigate a Homicide in the community of El Llano in Rio Arriba County.

New Mexico State Police Uniform officers responded to 1517 El Caballo Qunio Dr. in El Llano in reference to a 911 hang up call.

When officers arrived at the residence, they encountered Jullian Medelez, 45, of El Llano. He walked out of the residence holding a knife and told officers he was going to get a gun and shoot them.   

Officers attempted to negotiate with Medelez, giving him numerous verbal commands to surrender. Negotiation attempts with Medelez were unsuccessful.

Medelez continued to walk in and out of the residence yelling at officers. Medelez told officers there was a man inside the residence bleeding. After a brief standoff, officers were able to take Medelez into custody.   

After Medelez was taken into custody, officers located a male lying on the floor with a gunshot wound inside the residence. The male was identified as George Albert Lewis II, 32, of Santa Fe. Lewis II was pronounced deceased by the Office of Medical Investigator.

During the investigation, agents learned Lewis II was helping Medelez move during the day. At some point, Medelez shot Lewis II with a handgun while inside the residence.

Agents found a loaded handgun near Lewis II. There also were fired casings found outside near the front door of the residence. The handgun and fired casings were taken into evidence.    

Medelez was booked into the Rio Arriba County Detention Center and charged with the following:  

  • Murder in the 2nd Degree;
  • Tampering with Evidence (3rd Degree Felony);
  • Aggravated Assault Upon a Peace Officer (3rd Degree Felony) (2 Counts); and
  • Resisting, Evading or Obstructing a Peace Officer (Misdemeanor).
