Twenty five runners took advantage of cloudy weather to compete for best time predictions on the one and three mile Turkey Trot pace race courses in Bayo Canyon and on North Mesa Tuesday night.
Surprisingly, all but two runners completed the 3 mile distance in less time than they predicted. The three best predictors were: Duane Marr, 15 second error; Alexander Romero, 18 second error; and Ted Romero, 30 second error. Fastest male and female runners on the one mile course were Erik Leonard , 9:15, and Georgia Pedicini, 16:02, while
Eight swimmers from the Charger Aquatics – Los Alamos swim team attended a unique competitive swim camp June 16-24 at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
Swimmers include Maria Venneri, 15, Connor Schultz, 16, Sam Harris, 15, Sarah Lott, 14, Isabelle Runde, 14, Kaan Unal, 13, Radhika Iyer, 12 and Sara Shiina, 12.

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the 8th Annual High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament Saturday, July 21 at the North Mesa Mud Pits.
Games start at 9 a.m., and each team must have six to 12 players, with a minimum of four women.
The cost is $130 per team. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m., Thursday July 19.

Bandelier National Monument Superintendent Jason Lott has announced that effective this evening, Stage II Fire Restrictions no longer apply for Bandelier National Monument.
These restrictions are reduced to Stage I in light of the increase in moisture and reduction of fire danger.
Under Stage I Fire Restrictions, smoking outside of vehicles, open campfires outside of developed campsites, and fireworks are prohibited.
The use of campfires or charcoal grills is allowed in developed sites only, but not in the backcountry; in addition to vehicles, smoking

The storm that came through this area Wednesday evening brought flooding that temporarily closed N.M. 501 and sections of N.M. 4.
The new ashy-black mud along Frijoles Creek shows how high the water was running here.
The trails are open, and lots of people are visiting, but the three temporary bridges along the trail to Alcove House and the second bridge on the Falls Trail washed away – time for wet feet!

Los Alamos Aquatomics hosted the Nick Nogar Memorial Invitation Swim Meet June 23-24, at the Walkup Aquatic Center.
Swimmers from as far away as Texas were among the 175 swimmers from 11 teams who participated in the event.
This meet was dedicated to Nick Nogar, a former Los Alamos High School, University of New Mexico and U.S. Masters swimmer.
Nogar was a devoted supporter of swimming at all levels. He served the Aquatomics in many capacities, as president and perennial member of the board
The Los Alamos County Recreation Division will present the Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament at 6 p.m., Wednesday July 25 at East Park.
Putt-Putt registration forms are available at the Aquatic Center and must be returned to the Aquatic Center.
The deadline for pre-registration is 5 p.m., Monday July 23.
Registration is limited to 20 participants per age category.
Age categories are separated as follows:
- 5-7 Years
- 8-11 Years
- 12+ Years

Join the Los Alamos Recreation Division Saturday, Aug. 18, as it presents the 38th Annual Los Alamos Triathlon in all its glory.
The 20k bike ride is back to its old course of challenging climbs and beautiful scenery; then jump in the pool (feet first) for a 400 meter swim; and conclude with the 5K run from the Aquatic Center to the First Baptist Church on Diamond Drive and then turning around and running back to the Aquatic Center.
The Los Alamos triathlon was organized by Bill and Maureen Hudson in 1975 and is the longest running continuous triathlon in the country.

The Valles Caldera Trust (Trust) released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Public Access and Use Plan (PAUP) aimed at expanding visitor access to the Valles Caldera National Preserve (preserve). The plan describes six alternatives for the development of facilities and infrastructure on the landscape including sites for a visitor center. The DEIS describes possible effects and environmental impacts each alternative may have on the preserve. A complete version of the DEIS is available at www.vallescaldera.gov
PGA Golf Pro Donnie Torres is raising money for golfing programs for youth and the Rotary Club of Los Alamos in his “Longest Day Longest Play” fundraiser.
