SWNSC News:

The Southwest Nordic Ski Club competed in the Leadville Loppet held Feb. 17 and in the Chamalauf event Feb. 24 in Wolf Creek.

Both events took place in Colorado. Fourteen skiers headed to the Leadville Loppet for the hot blueberry soup, gorgeous Mineral Belt Trail views and costumed events. Additionally, club members headed to Wolf Creek Ski Area for the “consolation” Chamalauf event.

The event was considered a consolation because it was put on to make up for the fact that the Chama Chile Ski Classic and Durango Pine Need Langlauf were cancelled due to low snow conditions. While Wolf Creek is a known downhill skiing destination it also has almost 10km of groomed cross country ski trails starting at the Alberta Lift.

Wolf Creek delivered with plenty of fresh snow the evening before the event and nice cold winter temperatures on the morning of the event. Six SWN Ski Kids braved the cold and wind and skied the 3km race. Club member Mila Moseley won the 3km overall while club members Levi and Luke Gibson were first and second in the boys 8 and younger category. Aamon Atchley accidentally skied a slightly different course and Quanah Moseley did not finish. But all kids had fun playing in the huge snow bank at the awards ceremony.

Cross country skiing is a fun, affordable and family friendly sport with a growing community in North New Mexico. Southwest Nordic Ski Club, in a partnership with USFS, maintains and grooms 12km of Canada Bonita Trail to provide access to free cross country skiing for our area when there is snow.
