PEEC is working with the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VALL) to offer educational, family-friendly, hikes this winter. A VALL ranger and a PEEC representative will lead a 2 – 2.5 hour, easy-to-moderate snowshoe hike. Along the way, participants will have the chance to learn tricks and tips to navigating by snowshoe, understand how plants and animals adapt to cope with winter, and explore the complex geology of the Jemez mountains.
The first hike is10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Meet at the Valle Grande Entrance Station.
These guided snowshoe hikes are limited to 35 participants over the age of 8. Hikes will vary in length and location depending on the ability of the group and snow conditions. Dress in layers, including water-resistant boots, and come prepared with water, snacks, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

- The date of the snowshoe hike: Dec. 31
- Your name,
- Contact phone number,
- Number in your party,
If you need snowshoes and/or poles, they may be available for rent through Los Amigos de Valles Caldera’s Valle Grande Bookstore for a reduced fee. Please add how many pairs of snowshoes and/or poles you’d like to reserve and the weight/height of each person in your party (to ensure proper sizing). Note: VALL only has a few pairs of snowshoes available.
Snowshoes are also available to rent at the Los Alamos Aquatic Center (505.662.8170.
Hikes will happen with or without snow!
This hike is limited to 35 participants. Admission: Preserve entrance fee.
NOTE: The hike leader has the right to refuse participation to anyone he or she feels is not fully prepared for the hike. You will be asked to provide an emergency contact name and phone number. If the hike says “full” you may be put on the waiting list. If you’re signed up and can’t make it, please let the park know so that someone else can take your place.
