Los Alamos K-12 schools and other local educational entities are the beneficiaries of a $43,060 donation from Smith’s Food & Drug Store, a result of participation in the grocer’s “Earn & Learn” rewards program.

A check presentation to each school or organization was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith’s Food & Drug Store at 535 Central Ave. in Los Alamos.

More than 20 educational entities received funds. The top five recipients were:

  • Barranca Mesa Elementary – $5,809;
  • Mountain Elementary – $5,689;
  • Los Alamos High School – $5,605;
  • Los Alamos Middle School – $5,193; and
  • Aspen Elementary – $5,630.

The annual donation is unrestricted and participants may select the most appropriate use of the gift.

To enroll in the Earn & Learn program, parents of students present a letter from their school with a bar code that links the person’s Smith’s rewards card to the school. Each time the card is used, the school earns money. For more information, call 1-800-444-8081 ext. 1672.
