Blue Sky Pilates owner Mary Lutes moved to Los Alamos in 1982.

“Everyone has a reason for coming to Los Alamos. Mine is I ‘married’ into the town,” Lutes said. “I met my first husband at New Mexico State University, we got married and decided to move to Los Alamos because that is where he was from.”

Lutes opened her Blue Sky Pilates studio in April 2011 at 2101 Trinity Dr, Suite A.

“Pilates is the most amazing type of exercise. It strengthens literally every muscle in the body, and teaches individuals how to move more efficiently from their core,” she said. “No matter what a person does, Pilates will help them do it better.”

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s as a type of exercise that strengthens from within, and includes a strong mind and body connection.

Pilates focuses on the breath, proper form and efficient movement patterns, strengthening the core, improving balance, increasing coordination and decreasing stress. Pilates is extremely effective in relieving pain, too. It is appropriate for anyone from 10 to 100 years of age.

Lutes has two teachers who teach at the studio, Sabrina Svard and Helen Rinke and she says that without their help Blue Sky Pilates wouldn’t be what it is today.

Svard brought 20 years of Pilates teaching experience to Blue Sky Pilates. Her knowledge of the Method is amazing, Lutes said, adding that Rinke is considered an apprentice, teaching Pilates Mat classes at this time. Her desire to learn and her enthusiasm have made working with her a pleasure.

Lutes began studying the Pilates Method 12 years ago. She began her journey because she was experiencing debilitating pain caused from a connective tissue disorder, Fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) (very similar to MS), and degenerative disk disease.

“Without the strength I have gained from Pilates I would probably be in a wheel chair now,” she said.

Lutes successfully passed the Pilates Method Alliance Certification Exam, this being the highest certification level in the Pilates field.

The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) is the international professional association and certifying agency for Pilates professionals. She has completed more than 600 hours in training, which was required prior to taking this exam.

“I am passionate about Pilates and helping individuals achieve optimal physical well being. I started practicing Pilates to alleviate pain in my body, but experienced so many other benefits from this phenomenal exercise program,” she said.

“My goal is to help my clients become stronger individuals, both in body and in spirit as I have through Pilates. If it was up to me everyone would be required to do Pilates every day in order to lead a more pain free, balanced, strong life.”
