Sign Up Open for YMCA Youth Basketball

YMCA News:

The YMCA Youth Basketball Program is open to all youth in first- sixth grades. Teams are divided based on the elementary school where a child attends, or nearest to their home, so youth can practice and play with friends and classmates.

Grades one and two will be on co-ed teams. Girls and Boys will be separate on the older teams.

Teams are coached by parents and volunteers who have had YMCA Volunteer training, background check, and a coaches training from the Los Alamos High School basketball coaches. This provides instruction on teaching skills and drills so players will learn a system of basketball practice and discipline that is consistent with the middle and high school programs. This is a collaborative effort to teach proper basketball technique, ease the transition into older and more competitive play, and improve the success and confidence of players now and in years to come.

Season will start the week of Dec. 2, with practices twice a week until Feb. 28. Games will be on Saturdays, Jan. 11 through March 1. Cost of the program covers gym rental, equipment usage, team jerseys (yours to keep), and paid referees for the third-fourth and fifth-sixth grade games.

Contact the Y’s front desk for details about the program and for scholarship information at 505.662.3100.

Those interested in being referees may turn in an application to The Family YMCA by Dec. 1.
