Dist. 43 Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard
Statement from Dist. 43 Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard, “After a string of fraudulent mailers and yesterday’s (Oct. 15) utterly false attack against a vote I didn’t even make, Advance New Mexico Now PAC has clearly illustrated their disregard for the facts and the depths with which they will deceive to sway an election. The truth is that I voted against the bill cited in the mailer and Advance New Mexico PAC and my opponent have repeatedly distorted the facts instead of focusing on real solutions to solve New Mexico’s problems.
“I am proud of my voting record and the work I have done to advance our public education system and protect small businesses and children. It’s not the voting record of a Democrat or a Republican but an independent voice that represents the interests of this unique district.”
Backstory: On Oct. 15, 2014, voters throughout House Dist. 43 received a mailer from Advance New Mexico Now PAC, a political action committee headed by Matt Chandler and primarily funded by the Republican State Leadership Committee. The mailer claims that Garcia Richard voted in favor of SB 294 in 2013. SB 294, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, would have allowed some criminal records to be expunged after a hearing before a district judge. SB 294 passed on a 40-26 vote and contrary to the mailer, Garcia Richard broke party rank and voted against the measure. The bill was eventually vetoed by Gov. Susana Martinez.
