Santa Fe National Forest Renews Closure Order Banning Extended Camping, Public Nudity And Underage Drinking

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) Thursday renewed an occupancy and use closure order that prohibits camping for more than 14 days, public nudity and underage drinking on all lands, roads and trails within forest boundaries.

The order is in effect until Dec. 31, 2026, unless rescinded earlier.

The occupancy and closure order, which is in compliance with Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, is intended to protect resources and provide for public health and safety.

The order prohibits camping for more than 14 days, whether consecutive or not, within any 45-day period to prohibit forest visitors from setting up residency on Forest Service lands.

The ban on public nudity is to protect visitors, including families and school groups, who may be sensitive to public nudity.

The final part of the order reinforces state law prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone under the age of 21.

Exemptions to this closure order include federal, state and local officers and members of any organized rescue team or firefighting force in the performance of their official duty, individuals over 21 who are not otherwise under any legal restriction prohibiting the possession of alcoholic beverages, and any others with a permit specifically exempting them from this order.

Violation of the closure order is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment of not more than six months, or both.

Copies of the closure order and map are posted on the SFNF website and available at all SFNF offices.
