Staff Report

Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert A. Garcia presented an official vehicle slated for auction to Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero last week in Santa Fe.

“He said it was to help me out and in honor of my 23 years of service as a sheriff with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department,” Lucero said.

Lucero is serving his second term in office and his requests for an official vehicle have been denied during each term by the Los Alamos County Council. Council indicated that the position of sheriff does not warrant an official vehicle and also expressed concern that it may confuse citizens who may think the sheriff is authorized to respond to criminal issues.

“The Council is going to discuss the vehicle gift from the SFCSO at Tuesday’s Council meeting and decide whether to allow me to keep it,” Lucero said. “I encourage anyone with an opinion on this to attend that meeting.”
