SFCC Hosts Expanding Your Horizons STEM Workshops For Girls Saturday

Santa Community College hosts Fall 2016 Expanding Your Horizons Santa Fe featuring keynote address, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workshops for girls in fifth through eighth grade led by women professionals, and a STEM and College Fair, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday Oct. 15, at SFCC, 6401 Richards Ave.
About 200 fifth- through eighth-grade girls will attend. The conference will feature hands-on STEM workshops with female role models, who work in STEM professions.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. in the campus center, followed by keynote address at 9 a.m. in the Jemez Rooms. The first set of hands-on workshops is from 9:45-10:55 a.m. and the second is from 11 a.m. until 12:10 p.m. The STEM Fair will be from 1:30-3 p.m.
The keynote speaker is Sara Del Valle, a Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist. She studies the use of mathematics to model infectious diseases. The workshops will be in classrooms and labs primarily in the West Wing, upper and lower levels. The STEM Fair runs from 1:30-3 p.m. in the Jemez Rooms.
Registration is now closed. Participants registered with a $10 fee or waiver request. Statistics indicate that women hold 57 percent of college degrees, but only 21 percent of those degrees are in STEM subjects.
