The Topper girls participated in their final home game Wednesday night. Previous to the game, Griffith Gymnasium was decorated with balloons and other assortments in honor of the Senior Toppers Bell Larribas, Elena Abeyta, Casey Trujillo, Sienna Ahlers, Ashley Logan and Shannon Irwin for their time as Toppers in a pre-game ceremony. The Espanola seniors were honored for their time, and the Sundevils congratulated the Topper Seniors for their time playing.

The atmosphere was easy and friendly compared to the Boy’s game versus Espanola. Sadly the Girls did not go out with a bang as they would have hoped. Previous to the Varsity’s clash, the C-team and JV both ended with a victory over Espanola. JV won after a first half deficit of nine and ended the game 56-49.

The first quarter of the Varsity game was particularly good with both teams playing point for point basketball, and the quarter ended with the girls tied 11-11. Even with the Toppers strong efforts to hold back Espanola’s high scoring play style, they could not keep up and the first half ended 21-30 with a Sundevil lead.

Unfortunately the Girls did not have the same level of support from the stands as the Boys’ Rivalry clash. The loudest thing in the gym was the squeaking of the sneakers, and this may have played into the Toppers down trod in the second half. Espanola figured out a way to break down Los Alamos ending the game 64-32. Even without a victory on their leave, the seniors were very optimistic about their time spent playing the game.

Abeyta summed her time up best, “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life, it has taught me a lot of life lessons, and I have gotten lots of great friendships out of it.”
