This month’s Science On Tap features Maryline Ferrier who will talk about harnessing Actinium-225 for cancer treatment beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20,  at UnQuarked Wine Room, 145 Central Park Square. Light refreshments will be provided for this event by the Central New Mexico Section of the American Chemical Society.

For this event, Ferrier, with the Lab’s Inorganic Isotope & Actinide Chemistry group, will talk about the research taking place at the Lab to better understand actinium-225. This unique and rare radioisotope has tremendous potential for the treatment of cancer. Better knowledge of the properties of actinium-225 could be used to develop a novel, attractive cancer treatment called targeted alpha therapy, which exploits alpha emissions to destroy malignant cells while minimizing the damage to healthy surrounding tissue.

Science On Tap happens every third Thursday of the month and is sponsored by the Los Alamos Creative District and hosted by the Bradbury Science Museum.

The On Tap series begins each evening with an informal 10-15 minute lecture followed by a lively group discussion. All ages are welcome! On Tap is a way for people to get out and about in the community, learn something new, and meet people with similar interests. The discussions are supported by Bradbury Science Museum, Fuller Lodge Art Center, Los Alamos Historical Society and PEEC at The Nature Center.
