Science On Tap: ‘Accobeam & How Technological Innovations Using Sound Are Changing What Is Seen’

LANL Scientist Dr. Vamshi Chillara

LACD News:

Join the Bradbury Science Museum and the Los Alamos Creative District for Science On Tap at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14 at UnQuarked Wine Room.

This discussion will feature Dr. Vamshi Chillara of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Acoustics and Sensors Team.

Are you interested in how current research at Los Alamos is improving biomedical imaging and long-range undersea communications? Are you curious about innovations using sound wave collimation to “see” further and more clearly into materials including the human body and bone, cement, even nine feet of rock?

At the Lab, researchers are addressing these questions right now with the ACCOBeam, a 2018 finalist for the R&D 100 Awards. Capable of providing high resolution imaging through extremely attenuating materials, including rock formations and drilling mud, the ACCOBeam’s many potential applications are set to revolutionize how we view our selves and the world around us.

About the On Tap Series:

On Tap is a series of discussions hosted at UnQuarked in downtown Los Alamos. Each month features one On Tap with a rotating theme. The Pajarito Environmental Education Center partners with the Creative District to host Nature On Tap. The Los Alamos Historical Society and Fuller Lodge Art Center host History and Art On Tap, respectively. The Bradbury Science Museum hosts Science On Tap every month.

Registration for this event is not required. Admission is free. UnQuarked Wine Room by Sirphey offers a wide selection of wines and beers on tap. Be sure to arrive early to place your order from Sirphey’s made-fresh daily menu!
