Rotary Club of Los Alamos
Members of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos gathered Tuesday evening, Dec. 13, at Cottonwood on the Greens for their annual Winter Holiday Party.
Over 40 members and guests attended, enjoying a buffet dinner, friendship, holiday cheer, entertainment by the Lads of Enchantment, and a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses. Linda Bullock was inducted as the Club’s newest member; two members received Paul Harris Fellowship honors for their donations to The Rotary Foundation; and the Club’s two youth exchange students spoke about holiday traditions in their homelands, Germany and Taiwan. The Club’s international service in South Africa and Guatemala was recognized, respectively, by Martin Bucher of the Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana and by Deborah Simon of the Rotary Club of Santa Fe.
To promote local small businesses, generous prizes were raffled from Samizdat Bookstore and Teahouse, Atomic City Quilts, Pet Pangaea, the LAMC Lobby Shop, Pajarito Environmental Nature Center, Flowers by Gillian, and the Los Alamos County Golf Course. Rotarian Oliver and Kateri Morris also donated a basket of specialty foods. The proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets will support the Club’s scholarship program for local students.
The Rotary Club sincerely thanks these local businesses for their generosity and encourages the community to explore the selection of engaging gift ideas each business offers. Each offers items of particular interest for holiday shopping!
Dr. Martin Bucher, a 1985 graduate of Los Alamos High School, spoke at the holiday party hosted by the Rotary Club of Los Alamos Dec. 13. Bucher, a researcher at the University of Paris and also the President of the Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana in South Africa, where he teaches in the summer, described the grant his club and the Los Alamos club have partnered on to expand math education to underserved students.
