Joyce Eyster was born on March 13, 1921 in Tintah, Minn., and grew up on a farm near Wheaton, Minn. She married Eugene Eyster in 1942 and the couple moved in 1948 to Los Alamos.
The Eyster’s have five children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. They lived on 41st Street and loved their neighbors, her daughter Kathy Eyster told the Los Alamos Daily Post.
Joyce and her family hosted a yearly Christmas party, and helped with the summer neighborhood picnic. She lived in the same house until moving in 2016 to Aspen Ridge Lodge.
Kathy said that her mom has always been active in the community. In the early years she and several friends did catering. She was a member of the Los Alamos Medical Center Pink Ladies, several hiking groups and was an avid swimmer.
In 2015 Joyce was named a Los Alamos living treasure. She was known as the “Cookie Lady” and will always be “Grandma Cookie” to her family.
Faith and church have always been important to Joyce, her daughter said. Bethlehem Lutheran Church honored Joyce for being the longest continuous member of the Senior Choir of which she proudly sang for 65 years.
“The past 100 years have been busy, full of joy, love and faith.”
