Scenes From 2018 County Fair & Rodeo Parade

The 2018 Fair and Rodeo Parade with the theme ‘Back to Your Roots’ marched down Central Avenue Saturday morning. The parade was a big one with 33 entries this year. Newly appointed Los Alamos County Councilor Morrie Pongratz served as Parade announcer. Photo by John McHale/ladailypost.com

Parade judges declared the Los Alamos Historical Society the winner. Los Alamos History Museum got back to its roots with the ‘General’s Car’. In the back seat sat General Leslie Groves and Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, being driven around Los Alamos by Heather McClenahan as a member of the Women’s Army Corps, just as they were during Manhattan Project days. The winning entry won a Fair & Rodeo-themed gift basket with items purchased from Los Alamos MainStreet merchants. Photo by John McHale/ladailypost.com

Parade runner-up was a tie between Open Door Bible Ministry and Daniel’s Cafe. Open Door Christian Church represented descendants of Victor and Refugio Romero of Romero’s Cabin, now located at Fuller Lodge: Pastor Paul Jaramillo’s wife Patricia, who is a great-granddaughter; their granddaughter, who is a great-great-great-granddaughter; and great-great-grandson, driving the truck. They are descendants of one of several original homesteaders of the Pajarito Plateau. Photo by John McHale/ladailypost.com

Parade runner-up was a tie between Open Door Bible Ministry and Daniel’s Cafe. Daniel’s Café is a family business operating in Los Alamos since 1984. Daniel drove his 1951 Chevy pickup truck, which he’s been driving since his high school days! Many in town know this truck belonged to Daniel’s grandfather since it was brand new, in 1951. It has been driving the Los Alamos streets going on four decades and now Daniel’s grandchildren enjoy riding it in as well. Courtesy photo
