The Boys and Girls Hilltopper Cross Country teams started the season with bang Saturday morning, easily justifying their #1 preseason state rankings by MileSplit in a meet featuring about 30 of the best teams in New Mexico.
The Girls won all three of their races (Varsity, JV, and C-team) at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho. The ‘Topper Varsity team was  led by sophomore Delaney Ulrich, who took 3rd overall, followed by seniors Norissa Valdez (5th) and Kelly Wetteland (7th), and juniors Emma Montoya (10th), and Hailey McDowell (15th). Kamaya Ronning and Sophie Chadwick rounded out the team, in 19th and 21st places, respectively.
The Girls JV team was led by junior Zorah Fullop and freshman Rebecca Beaux, in 2nd and 3rd places overall.
The ‘Topper Girls finished 1-2-3 in the C-team race, led by junior Rebecca Moss, freshman Ella Miranda and senior Sophia Enriquez.
Senior Keith Bridge placed 2nd overall in the Boys Varsity race to lead the ‘Toppers to a 2nd place finish, behind an out-of-state team from El Paso. He was followed by seniors Rowan Flores (13th) and Morgan Schaller (15th), junior Jack Ammerman (17th), and senior Reuben Goettee (26th). Junior Beck Ellis and freshman Eddie Gartz rounded out the team.
In his first high school race, freshman Mikey Bane led the Boys JV team with a 5th place individual finish, to lead the ‘Toppers to a 4th place team finish behind three much larger 5A classification schools. Â
The Boys C-team placed 2nd, behind a larger 5A school, led by sophomore Armando Inbody, who placed 3rd overall.
