More than an intricate and ephemeral artform, sand drawing in Vanuatu is a storytelling tradition, conveying folklore, history, genealogy, rituals and other forms of kastom (local, traditional knowledge).
Sand drawing is a UNESCO-designated Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The Museum of International Folk Art exhibition features works created by Edgar Hinge, a sand drawing practitioner and museum educator from Port Vila, Vanuatu.
Opening events include Traditional “kastom” dancing, an opening “welkam” ceremony, and demonstrations of sandroing story performances by Sandroing Knowledge Bearers throughout the event.
Sunday, June 29, schedule:
- 1 p.m. — Opening Remarks by Richard Shing;
- 1:30 p.m. — Welcome Ceremony;
- 2 p.m. — Performances: Traditional Kastom Dances; and
- 3:30 p.m. — Performance: Traditional Kastom Dance.
Engage with a UNESCO recognized tradition and the first exhibition outside of Melanesia to focus on Vanuatu’s sandroing tradition.
