SANDOVAL COUNTY – Rio Rancho resident Laura M. Montoya, Democrat, announced her candidacy today for the 3rd Congressional District, which includes Los Alamos.

Montoya was elected Sandoval County Treasurer in 2012 and reelected in 2016 as one of the youngest elected officials in the state. She has served New Mexicans for more than 17 years, having worked in federal, state and county government.

Her career began as a constituent services representative for five counties in Northern New Mexico for U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman. She recently completed her sixth legislative session as Legislative Chair of the Treasurer’s Affiliate.

“I have a proven track record as an advocate for everyday New Mexicans whether it is writing legislation to protect our Veterans and senior citizens or to give land grants and pueblos the right of first offer on delinquent land; closing tax loopholes; or holding administrators accountable,” Montoya said. “As Northern New Mexico’s first congresswoman, I will take my legislative experience and more than 17 years in public service to Washington to protect equal rights and fight for affordable healthcare for all New Mexicans. I will demand improved educational outcomes, fight regressive tax policies and protect our land and water so we can secure the future for our next generation.

“I have seen firsthand that the current political climate has led to decisions that will hurt New Mexicans. Too often in our elections, powerful special interests have backed candidates taking away the people’s choice. I pledge my commitment to representing the people of Northern New Mexico’s interests first, and will not be taking contributions from payday lenders, the tobacco industry, pharmaceutical companies or corporate oil and gas.”

Montoya was born, raised and educated in Las Vegas, N.M. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Psychology and her Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from New Mexico Highlands University. She was a 2003 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and studied International Relations at the University of Costa Rica.

Montoya is the daughter of Michael and Geralyn Montoya of Las Vegas, N.M.
