COUNTY News:

Monsoon season has arrived in Los Alamos and across New Mexico through mid-September, bringing sudden downpours and dangerous flash floods.

Stay safe with these quick tips:

  • Stay alert – Check weather forecasts & storm alerts before heading out. Flash floods can arrive even if it’s not raining nearby;
  • If hiking, avoid canyons and arroyos during storms, move to higher ground if rain is near.
  • Tell someone your plans and return time;
  • Keep pets and kids away from canyons/arroyos;
  • Never walk or drive through floodwaters, six inches can knock you down, two feet can sweep away cars; and
  • If flooding occurs, shelter in place, stay calm. Emergency crews will help when safe to do so.
