SANTA ANA PUEBLO — The 2022 NM-WT Women’s Amateur took place at Twin Warriors Golf Club and Santa Ana Golf Club.

The first round took place at Twin Warriors with the last two taking place at Santa Ana.

Rylee Salome, 15, of Belen earned her third win of the SCAGA season, going two over par on the week. Salome shot 76 the first day at Twin Warriors, placing her three strokes off the lead. A bogey-free round of 70 the second day would place her three strokes in the lead, and she would fire an even par 72 to claim the title. She claims that making back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 was what helped her win the championship.

“When I made the birdie on 14, and then a birdie on 15, that made it a little more comfortable,” Salome said.

Salome has multiple wins this season, which include SCAGA Championships, Sun Country Junior Tour Events, and the NMAA High School Championship. Three of her wins this season have come at Santa Ana; the High School Championships, the SCAGA Four-Ball, and the Women’s Amateur.

“I think I just play good on this course,” Salome said. “I like the way this sets up good for me, and I’m just comfortable here now.”

Golf is a popular sport in the Salome family. Salome’s uncle, Anton, ranks sixth in the SCAGA Senior Player of the Year list. Both Anton and Rylee will play on the SCAGA Challenge Cup team July 30 at New Mexico State University Golf Course. Rylee says that she has learned a lot from her uncle.

“He is always very calm out there, and never gets upset, and I think that I can learn from that,” Salome said. “He always tells me the important shot is the next shot. So don’t worry about the past, worry about the future.”

The month of July will be busy for Salome. She will compete in the U.S Girl’s Junior Amateur at the Club at Olde Stone in Kentucky, and then travel to Montana to represent team Sun Country in the Girl’s Junior Americas’ Cup.

“I think this will give me pretty good confidence,” Salome said. “I played pretty well today. I was hitting my driver good, my irons good, and putting really good.”

The next SCAGA event will be the NM-WT Senior Amateur Aug. 17-18 at Albuquerque CC. The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association provides administrative services for all amateurs playing in the geographic area of New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas. The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association says their purpose is to promote mutual trust and friendly relationships among members by encouraging and promoting successful golf operations.
