The North Central RTD (“Blue Bus”) has installed new air purification systems across 56 buses to improve air quality and reduce exposure to harmful viruses, bacteria, mold, pollen and various types of dust. 

The Blue Buses previously had air filtration systems but have since been updated to add an additional layer of safety for riders.

“Improving air quality is part of the District’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment for our customers and operators,” District Executive Director Anthony Mortillaro said.

In larger buses a Valeo Ultraviolet (UV-C) air filter was installed. Purified air will continuously flow in the passenger compartment while the vehicle is running. The Valeo system has a virus concentration limit comparable to that of a hospital operation room and ensures virus concentration is kept at a low level.

For smaller vehicles, Ford Transits and Dodge Caravans, a Proair HEPA-3 Filter was installed. This system cycles the air 8 to 9 times per hour and will protect both driver and passenger.

The North Central Regional Transit District provides fare-free bus service to an area that encompasses over 10,000 square miles of north central New Mexico including the counties of Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Taos, the Eight Northern Pueblos and the Jicarilla Apache Nation.
