Road Closures July 30 For 42nd Annual Los Alamos County Triathlon

Join the Los Alamos County Recreation Division for the 42nd annual Los Alamos Triathlon July 30.

The race starts with a 20K bike ride that includes challenging climbs and great scenery, then into the pool (feet first) for a 400-meter swim and ends with a 5K run from the Aquatic Center to the First Baptist Church on Diamond Drive and back.

The following road closures will be in effect for this race:

  • Canyon Road will be closed 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to through traffic from Central Avenue to the Los Alamos United Church;
  • Canyon Road will be closed 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from Central Avenue to Diamond Drive;
  • Cyclists will be traveling 7-9 a.m. on Canyon Road, Diamond Drive and West Jemez Road; and
  • Runners will be traveling 8-11 a.m. on Canyon Road and Diamond Drive.  

Police officers will be directing traffic at the intersections of Diamond Drive and Canyon Road, Trinity Drive and Diamond Drive, Diamond Drive and West Jemez Road and Diamond Drive and Orange Street.

The 24th Annual Los Alamos Kids Triathlon also is Saturday July 30, following the Los Alamos Adult Triathlon and the race is a continuous event. The event begins at 11 a.m. at the Aquatic Center. Canyon Road will reopen at 1:30 p.m. to traffic.

Volunteers for both events are needed for traffic control, packet pick-up, timing and various small duties. Volunteering at the Triathlon is fun, a chance to meet new people of all ages, and watch outstanding athletes in action. All volunteers receive a t-shirt and the gratitude of participants and the Recreation Division.
