SANTA FE ― Rev. Duncan Lanum, 78, Rector at St. Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church, headed out June 12 on a 2,000 mile bicycle ride from Santa Fe to Tampa, Fl., to honor the memory of his beloved wife, Joy Rose Lanum and raise funds for Many Mothers.
Many Mothers is a volunteer, community-based organization that is the 21st century version of an extended family. Their free services are available to any family regardless of income level. Trained volunteers provide physical, emotional, and practical support to any family during the critical early months following the birth or adoption of a new baby.
In the past year, Many Mothers began offering baby boxes to low-income families with at new baby. Many Mothers lovingly calls the program Joy’s Baby Boxes in honor of Joy and the memorial fund in her name that helped launch the project. Joy’s Baby Boxes are available to families in Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties who are expecting or have a newborn.
Duncan and Joy were married for a short 12 years before her death March 12, 2015. Duncan shares, “Joy was the love of my life” and it is his hope and goal that such a trip will inspire generous contributions to the Joy Rose Lanum Memorial Fund, which will help the nonprofit Many Mothers continue to support mothers and babies as he wife would so lovingly desire.
Joy Lanum was an obstetrics nurse for her entire professional career spanning 50 years. For the last 16 years of her life, she combined her skills as a Registered Nurse and lactation consultant with her unending love for babies by serving as an active volunteer for Many Mothers.
Executive Director Nancy Guthrie said, “Joy was such a gift to this community; she helped so many families through her work as a nurse, lactation consultant, and volunteer with Many Mothers. Duncan’s love for Joy and desire to continue helping families in Joy’s name is an inspiration to all of us at Many Mothers. We are honored to honor and remember Joy with the Joy Rose Lanum Memorial Fund.”
