In what was clearly a dry-run for the State Championship, the Hilltopper Boys and Girls Track & Field teams turned in spectacular results Friday and Saturday, April 21-22, at the Richard Harper Invitational at Albuquerque Academy.
The Girls dominated the competition, scoring more than 3x the points of runner-up Albuquerque Academy, and decisively winning the meet with 155 points. Individual event winners included Jaiya Daniels in the 100, 200, and triple jump, Anna Wetteland in the 400, Emma Montoya in the 1600, Nyla Lee in the long jump, and Dani Trellue and Colette Bibeault (tie) in the pole vault. The Topper Girls also won the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, and 4×800 m relays.
The Hilltopper Boys placed 2nd with 61 points to 5A powerhouse Cleveland, with 77 points, but well ahead of our main 4A competitor Albuquerque Academy, who finished 6th with 30.5 points. The Topper highlights of the meet were Melaki Gutierrez’s new 200 m LAHS School Record of 21.42 seconds in the 200 m, and the 4×400 m relay team of Alex Pasulka, Daniel Kim, Grafton Urbatsch, and Gutierrez, who ripped a time of 3:22.46 to break the 36 year-old LAHS school record in that event.
New State Qualifiers included Benjamin Sanchez and Jack Ammerman in the 3200, and the 4×800 relay team of Jack Ammerman, Beck Ellis, Eddie Gartz, and Grafton Urbatsch.
Next up is the Larry Baca Memorial Invitational (the LAHS Home Meet) at Sullivan Field on this upcoming Friday afternoon.
