Registration Underway For YMCA Youth Basketball

YMCA News:

The Family YMCA honors the principals of the former all-girls Los Alamos Basketball program that it assumed several years ago, with the philosophy that all-girls teams foster a learning and growing dynamic that will help hone skill with teammates they could play with in future years.

The Y is taking youth basketball registration until Nov. 23 for all girls teams grades 3-4 and 4-5, co-ed teams for grade 1-2 and all-boys teams grades 3-4 and 5-6. Teams are based on the school where the players attend and will practice at a local gym. Games are Saturdays in January and February.

The Family YMCA is also hosting a Saturday morning basketball-skill sessions to help new players learn basic skills. The fundamentals program will be led by Y volunteer coaches and run from 9-10 a.m. for grades 1-2 and 10-11 a.m. for 3-6 grade Nov. 15 at the YMCA gymnasium.

The sessions are open to youth registered for the Y’s Youth Basketball Program, but potential basketball players are welcome to come check it out to see if they want to join. Sessions will be targeted toward youth who have little or no basketball experience and will focus on dribbling, passing, and shooting.

Parents need to escort youth into the building and sign in at the front desk. The Youth Basketball Program for 1-6h graders starts Dec 1. Cost is $100 / $75 for Y members. Register at the Y front desk by Nov 23. Scholarships are available. For more information call the Y at 505.662.3100.
