Registration Opens For Family Y’s Earth Service Crew Environmental Education And Volunteer Service Program

YMCA News:

Registration is open for The Family YMCA’s Earth Service Crew (YESC) environmental education and volunteer service program for middle-school aged youth.

YESC meets 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursdays, from June 20-July 29. Registration, on a weekly basis, closes when spaces are filled.

The program empowers youth to be effective, responsible global citizens by providing opportunities for environmental education and action, leadership development and cross-cultural awareness.

During the summer, youth learn tool safety, trail maintenance, ecological restoration, and numerous environmental concepts while providing hands-on community service.

The YESC program started in 2001 following the Cerro Grande fire with the goal of providing an opportunity for youth to assist in repairing trails. They also performed repair work after Las Conchas fire in 2011. More recently, YESC has worked with various nonprofit agencies in the community to help assist with needed projects including PEEC, the Cooperative Market and the Eco-Station.

The Delle Foundation, started by Helen and George Cowan, has underwritten the program since it started. Helen Cowan, who passed away in 2011, was an avid hiker and a devotee of local trails.

Since YESC began, 290 youth have participated volunteering more than 26,000 hours of service. The value of this work toward the community, when given a near minimum wage value of $10.00/hr is $260,000.

Registration may be completed at the Y or online. For more information call the Y at 505.662.3100.
