The Los Alamos High School boys and girls cross country teams are now accepting registrations for the 11th Annual Elementary Mile Run, which is 4:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20. This free event will take place between the girls and boy’s varsity cross country meets at the Los Alamos County Golf Course.
“We started it just to provide a means for younger kids to see and participate in the great sport of cross country. Most of the elementary schools have a run or walk club, so this this gives them something to look forward to and generates school spirit,” Head Coach Kathy Hipwood said.
The elementary mile run will take place on portions of the high school cross country course at the Los Alamos Golf Course which gives fans a chance to catch the events.
“The spectator-friendly setting at the golf course is fabulous and the atmosphere at the meet often surprises people – very busy and exciting,” Hipwood said.
You’ll want to arrive early; parking at the Los Alamos County Golf Course is limited.
“It has become a community event and we believe there have been over 100 participants in the elementary mile every year,” Hipwood said about arriving early.
Scoring for the Elementary Mile Run will look like a cross-country event. The places of each teams first five runners will be taken, with the lowest score winning. The school that wins the race will receive a trophy for their school. Also, the top 20 boys and girls will receive a ribbon.
