Registration Open For Los Alamos Online Learning Academy

LAPS News:

Registration for the 2021-22 school year at the Los Alamos Online Learning Academy (LAOLA) is now open.

LAOLA will host an informational meeting for parents of students entering kindergarten through grade 5 starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. This virtual meeting will provide an overview of the lower academy curriculum as well as the benefits of online learning, including small groups, a consistent and flexible schedule, and the concept of a portable school. Attendees also will  be able to meet the LAOLA staff and to ask questions.

“Our goal is for all students to have the same opportunity to learn and thrive. To help us meet this goal, we strive to keep things simple and to stay focused,” LAOLA Director Dr. Sharon Fogle said. “We want to build strong connections and relationships with students, and focus on student success. By participating in online classes, our students have the unique opportunity to learn and practice the skills that they will need to become successful adult learners.”

LAOLA offers a standards-based curriculum taught by experienced LAPS teachers for kindergarten through 8th grade in a convenient online platform. Teachers meet online daily with their students from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for whole and small group instruction. The afternoon schedule is reserved for optional help sessions, social gatherings, and extracurricular activities.

Some of the benefits of online classes include having a flexible schedule, an opportunity to explore individual interests, autonomy and independence.

“Students also like that they don’t have to get up as early in the morning, and there is no homework,” Dr. Fogle said.

LAOLA students are immersed in a culture that promotes learning through:

  • a learning pace which provides an opportunity to explore content in greater depth;
  • Smaller class sizes that allows for more individualized instruction and increased interaction with teachers;
  • minimal distractions and interruptions from inappropriate classroom behaviors;
  • a consistent schedule, clear expectations, and established routines;
  • opportunities to demonstrate mastery of content in various ways – design their own learning.

LAOLA was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it has grown into a viable alternative for students and families who thrive in this online learning environment. While many families are choosing to return to in person school for the fall, LAOLA is another school choice for the upcoming school year for students who wish to continue with online learning.
