Attention all red capped Ambassadors, you are asked to be at the pavilion on Ashley Pond at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, July 27 for the first of events for the Los Alamos Ambassadors with more to follow.
Every one is invited to this event, not just the red cappers.
In an effort for the Los Alamos Ambassadors to be fully equipped to guide visitors on Los Alamos history and how we got to where we are, Chief Park Ranger Kirk Singer will address the Ambassadors on the importance of the national park in telling the story of Los Alamos and the project to win World War II.
The National Park here is one of three sites in the United States that worked to develop the bomb that ended World War II. (Thank you very much Los Alamos).
The other two sites are in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge Tennesee.
There is still a lot of work to be done to have a fully mature program and exhibits in the park. Ranger Singer is trying to provide a means to allow visitors to have an escorted bus tour inside the wire at the lab so as to see historical places not now available.
Curently the office for the park is in the Community Building by Ashley Pond. The building itself is historic as the Telephone Building for the whole Los Alamos part of the Project. In the earliest days the telephone directory gave the numbers both for a residence and the work place telephone along with group designation where one worked. Back then one had to have a pass just to get in or out of town.
There are some good stories about this “Secret City” and at a future date the Ambassadors will get together to exchange stories. Don’t park that cap on the top of the dresser to gather dust.
Further events will be announced later and all Ambassadors are reminded that they are to wear the red cap and to greet our visitors.
