ESPANOLA ― Proposals are being accepted through Oct. 18 for the Native American Venture Acceleration Fund (NAVAF) awards from tribally held companies.
The Fund was created to boost employment and diversify the economy in Northern New Mexico, and will make awards up to $25,000 to tribally owned companies for critical technical services that lead to increased revenue and job creation. The current round of funding represents the fourth disbursement of awards.
Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the company that manages Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Regional Development Corporation (RDC) established the fund in 2011 as part of their investment in the Northern New Mexico economy.
“Native American entrepreneurs are building new companies and creating new jobs and the Native American Venture Acceleration Fund is playing a major role in these successes,” said Kathy Keith, Community Partnerships Office Director at LANL.
To be eligible, a business must have (at minimum) 51 percent ownership by a tribe or tribal member; be a tribal member or corporation of the Pueblos of Nambé, Ohkay Owingeh, Picuris, Santa Clara, Pojoaque, Taos, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Cochiti or Jemez; and be located within the counties of Sandoval, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, San Miguel, Mora, Rio Arriba or Taos.
“The RDC is looking forward to hearing from tribal communities, and are anticipating the largest number of proposals to date,” said RDC Executive Director Val Alonzo.
An information session for interested applicants is scheduled for 1-4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Northern New Mexico Citizens Advisory Board Office, 94 Cities of Gold Road in Pojoaque.
NAVAF awards may be used to procure specialized services or equipment for the company that will support growth in revenue and employees, such as hiring a consultant to ready the business for federal government contracting. Assistance in finding providers to fulfill the services required from successful applicants will be given from the Regional Development Corporation and the Community Partnerships Office at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
