FAMILY YMCA News:
Event to Support Youth Programs
Race guides, set-up and registration volunteers are needed to assist with The Family YMCA’s Holiday Half Marathon and Festive 5K set for Dec. 8.
Helpers are asked to call the Y as soon as possible at 662-3100 so staff may plan for needs. Volunteers can work from one to three hours in shifts starting at 7:30 a.m. for this event that will benefit youth programs.
In 2011, the Y served a total of 3,067 youth and teens in 77 youth programs.
The Y provides scholarships to ensure that no one is turned away for inability to pay.
The United Way of Northern New Mexico/Los Alamos this year supported youth program development by $10,000, but youth programs need an additional $14,000 per year for program delivery and development.
More after school activities for youth was cited as a top concern in a 2010 Los Alamos community needs assessment.
Respondents also mentioned the importance of keeping up the level of after school services, and developing more, particularly at high risks periods of the day.
Race funds will support youth programming this year and in the future, as half the proceeds will go toward the Y’s endowment program for youth programming.
For more information, call the Y at 662-3100 or visit laymca.org.
