Due to extraordinary rainfall pounding the local area, the Biological Research Laboratory, adjacent to the Los Alamos Cooperative Market at 95 Entrada Dr., had a dramatic retaining wall failure this morning. There were no injuries reported and normal operations are underway inside the Lab.

Bandelier is Closed Due to Flooding

Park Superintendent Jason Lott just confirmed that Bandelier National Monument is closed due to flooding. The park will likely be closed Saturday as well, he said.

"Our Flood Protection Plan has been effective ... there has been no damage to our buildings or archeological areas that we are aware of at this time," Lott said.

Lott added that no injuries have been reported as a result of this morning's flooding and that all personnel are accounted for.

Alert: All Roads Reopen Around Los Alamos But County Now Under Flash Flood Warning

The Los Alamos Police Department just announced that all roads around the Los Alamos area have reopened.

Commander Preston Ballew continues to urge motorists to stay off the roadways if at all possible. He asks those drivers who must be on the roads to exercize extreme caution.

The National Weather Service also just issued an alert advising that Los Alamos and the surrounding area is under a flash flood warning until 5 p.m. today.

Map Portrays Rainstorm Over Los Alamos

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has issued a map portraying this morning's storm activity over the Los Alamos area. The weather forecast includes numerous showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall throughout today, tonight and Saturday. Today's highs are expected to be in the 60s to 70s with tonight's lows in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Saturday's highs are expected to be in the 60s to lower 70s. Courtesy/NOAA

Schools, LANL, County Remain Open Today

Los Alamos Public Schools, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Los Alamos County remain open today.

Assistant Superintendent Gerry Washburn told the Los Alamos Daily Post a few moments ago that the schools coordinate their closures with Los Alamos National Laboratory.

"We have not heard from the Lab so unless something changes, our schools will remain open today," Washburn said.

LANL's Communications Office told the Los Alamos Daily Post that it has not received notice that the Lab intends to close early today. The County also said this morning that there is no plan at this
