LOS ALAMOS MASTER GARDNERS News:

August brings harvest time to gardeners and a time to enjoy their labors. Join the Los Alamos Master Gardeners’ Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 and learn some secrets to success in vegetable and flower gardening.

Six very beautiful and very different gardens illustrate how personal style and family needs influence design.

The tour is free; brochures are available at the library or at the extension office or http://lamgonline.org/docs/2012_MG_brochure.pdf.

Be sure to visit the stable gardens where three master gardeners will answer your questions and explain their varied approaches to gardening.

Another Los Alamos garden has nine garden rooms created using dirt and rock left over from a remodel; viewing the finished product belies the humble beginning.

Four gardens are in White Rock, and each has its own flavor influenced by the needs and wishes of the owners.

Visit a garden designed to require minimal maintenance, and imagine enjoying its fabulous outdoor living area.

Another garden is family and bird friendly and creatively fits a pond, a vegetable garden, flowers, lawn, shrubs and shade trees into a small lot.

The front garden of the third home takes you to the old south; moving around to the back transports you to an oriental paradise.

The owners have been working on the fourth garden for nearly 50 years, adapting the space to their changing needs; the back garden now features a hand dug stream and pond that produce a perfect quiet refuge.
