COMMUNITY News:

Professional basketball player Alex Kirk visited Pinon Elementary Wednesday, Aug 31.

Kirk, who has traveled worldwide, described how fortunate they are to go to school in Los Alamos, because they have a lot more opportunities than many other children and he advised them to take advantage of these opportunities.

Kirk advocated for pushing through and keeping one’s chin up. He said that as a child, he didn’t fully appreciate the combination of his mother and Powerschool, but he is grateful now because his mother’s high expectation resulted in him excelling in school and getting good grades. These efforts got him college offers because he was known as a “sure thing,” a solid student who would stay on the team. He saw great athletes lose scholarships because of drugs or not putting in their best effort.

Kirk is a Pinon alum, graduated from Los Alamos High School, played for UNM Lobos, Cleveland Cavaliers, Canton Charge, Pistoia, and Italy Bears.

His family has strong ties to Pinon and Los Alamos. His father, Alan Kirk and sister, Erin are also Pinon and LAHS alum, and his mother, Pat Kirk works at Pinon. Kirk is now in China playing for Foshan Long-Lions.
