SFNF News:SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest would like to remind the public that despite all the recent moisture, the potential for wildfires is always present.
At this time there are no fire restrictions on the forest; however, visitors are encouraged to be fire safe. It does not take much time for weather conditions and fuel moisture levels to change and increase the risk of wildfires. When building a campfire be sure to keep safety in mind before, during and after you light it.
To help minimize the risk of wildfires, please consider the following:

If you don’t need a fire, don’t build one.

Fireworks are not allowed on national forests.

Keep ample water and a shovel close to your campfire.

Build campfires in open areas clear of leaves or pine needles and away from overhanging tree branches.

Adults should always supervise children around a campfire.

Make sure campfires are cool to the touch before leaving the area. Start extinguishing your campfire one hour before leaving the campsite.

When smoking always dispose of cigarette debris in an ashtray and always smoke in approved areas.

Avoid driving in tall grass. Exhaust particles or hot catalytic converters can ignite and cause grass fires.

Fire crews will be out at some of the major campgrounds greeting visitors and educating them on campsite fire procedures.
